The Supreme Court of the United States of America has been established sense the founding of our nation in 1776 as one of the three major branches of our government. Initially at its founding it did not have much power, and its primary role was to just settle court disputes. This all changed however after the Judiciary act of 1789 where it was established as a watch dog. Its Job being to look over the other branches of government, uphold the constitution, and look for violations of law. The Judiciary act made the Supreme Court the most powerful court in our nation. Along with being the soul power to interpret the Constitution of the United States.

Currently in the United States most citizens are very weary of our government. Polls of confidence in our governmental institutions are at an all time low. According to Gallup Poll confidence in the United States Congress as of 2018 is at 11%. While the Presidency and Supreme court both come in with a ranking of 37%. Historically though this has not always been the case. In 2002 the Courts approval rating was 50%.

Most Americans have always accepted the Supreme Court’s rulings as being correct and founded in good faith and principle. However public opinion has started to shift. Over the past decade the Supreme Court has made many unpopular decisions and started to side along party lines. Most recently with the cases of Masterpiece Cake shop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission and the confirmation of Justice Kavanaugh. This has led more left leaning individuals to re-think the courts authority. The same has happened on the right with the Roe v. Wade decision.

It is going to take some time for the court to repair their image in the eyes of the American people. Every decision they make will not pleas everyone, but they should try to be more transparent with their decisions. Along with moving away from the polarizing party politics, to help restore their image as a nonpartisan branch of government.
